My sister Jennie was born with a hole in her heart. A congenital defect. As an infant, and an especially tiny one at that, she was not a good candidate for reparative open heart surgery. She was five years old before the benefits outweighed the risks. This photo of her here was taken on a beach in St. Augustine, Florida, the day before her surgery. My dad took her to capture some photos, in the event she didn’t survive.
